Speaker: Mary Ellen Ziliak
About the Speaker:
Mary Ellen Ziliak will be speaking about Fr. Jerry Ziliak, SVD, a Divine Word Missionary priest who served 50 years in India. His mission was to introduce and develop a method of agriculture along modern, scientific lines, adapted to the moral, social and economic conditions of the local people, to produce food for body and soul. Through nearly 50 years of dedicated work, Father Jerry helped the villagers sustain themselves through modern agricultural practices. Through his guidance, they established schools and hospitals for the untouchables. Christianity spread through his faith and love for the people. He retired in 1996, and returned to the United States to share the stories of his work in India and to continue raising financial support for the missions. A 1999 documentary, “Heroes Still Walk,” provided a close-up view of his work in India. His philosophy in life was simple: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and love your neighbor as yourself. If all of us could do that all over the world, think of what we could do.”
